West Virginia State University - WVSU

Charleston is fortunate enough to have several fine universities and schools situated around the city. One of them is West Virginia State University located in the greater Charleston area of Institute, West Virginia. The school the locals simply call “State” has been brought up on a storied history stemming back into the late 1800s. In fact the school is one of the original land-grant colleges in the country and is also a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Founded in 1891 as a predominantly black school, the institution has gone through a series of changes and re-namings to get to the point where it is right now. Booker T. Washington, a noted African American educator and statesman, played a vital role in bringing the school to the Kanawha Valley.

Along West Virginia State’s campus sits the East Hall and the Canty House, which in 1988 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Canty House   was the home of "Colonel" James Munroe Canty, and early instructor at the West Virginia Colored Institute as it was formerly known.  In 2003 the school's community college, which was established in 1953, was separately accredited as the West Virginia State Community and Technical College but remained administratively linked to West Virginia State College. A few years later when West Virginia State gained university status, becoming West Virginia State University the legislature fully separated the community and technical college. However, both schools continue to share the same campus. WVSU offers Biotechnology and Media Studies along with several other graduate degrees.

The Yellow Jackets as they are known in athletics include sports such as men's football, baseball, basketball, golf, tennis, and track & field and women's basketball, cheerleading, golf, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball. WVSU also has a marching band, which saw a period of resurgence under the direction of Chris Card. From 1995 until 2000, the band had an enrollment of between 35-50 members and continues to be known for its small size, yet unmistakably huge sound. There are several accredited vocal and jazz ensembles provided at State which include the “show band”, the WVSU Concert Choir, and the State singers. The State Singers consist of eight to ten vocalists with a required audition. The Singers also perform as the WVSU Vocal Jazz Choir and act as ambassadors for the University and frequently perform off campus for important community and cultural events.
