West Virginia University Institute of Technology is a four-year college located in mountainous landscape of Montgomery, West Virginia. Simply called “Tech” by the locals, the school is the largest regional campus of West Virginia University but is separately accredited from the main campus of WVU in Morgantown. As part of WVU, West Virginia Tech is still governed by the WVU Board of Trustees. The school was first founded at the sub-college level Montgomery Preparatory School of WVU in 1895. It was then separated from WVU in 1917 and renamed the West Virginia Trade School. The school reached the junior college level as the New River State School a few years later and became a four-year college as New River State College in 1931. It was renamed the West Virginia Institute of Technology in 1941 and began to grant degrees in engineering in 1952.
The institution added a community college and began to grant Master's Degrees in engineering in 1978. The community college hung around and was associated with West Virginia Tech until 2009 when they finally split apart, but still share the same campus. To help differentiate the two schools, a new name of Bridgemont Community and Technical College was announced for the community college in May 2009. West Virginia Tech also has some history located on its campus, in fact the "Old Main" building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
