The South Charleston Campus of Marshall University was founded in 1969 when the state of West Virginia reorganized its extension graduate system. West Virginia University was left to offer most of its graduate programs in the northern part of the state. Marshall was limited to the four counties surrounding its main campus in Huntington for its graduate-level programs. As a result the small College of Graduate Studies, as it was known, was created. Today, the branch offers both undergraduate and graduate level courses and many departments of the university are represented at the South Charleston campus. Some of the departments include the Graduate School of Education and Professional Development, Graduate Admissions, Associate Vice President for Outreach and Continuing Studies, the Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing, and the Graduate School of Management which consists of the Executive Master of Business Administration as well.
