The Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences is Charleston’s newest interactive museum, planetarium and performing arts center. Located downtown, just off of Interstate-64, the Clay Center has traveling and permanent exhibits, science galleries, movies and performances that your entire family will enjoy. The ElectricSky Theatre is a gigantic domed theatre that gives viewers an experience unlike any at a normal movie theatre. Visitors can be transported to distant stars and planets of our solar system, discover the Serengeti with a pack of roaming lions, or explore the mythical past and fragile future of bears from Alaska to Montana.
Children can spend all day playing in the Gizmo Factory which was designed to inspire curiosity and experimentation through the combination of physical sciences, creativity and engineering of sound, light, color, energy and magnetism. They can make their own music by plucking invisible laser strings on the Laser Harp, explore light by casting rainbow of shadows and even build their own roller coaster.
The Clay Center also has an extensive permanent art collection, and features traveling exhibits as well. Some recent exhibits include The Edge of Vision: Abstraction in Contemporary Photography, Artist to Icon: Early Photographs of Elvis, Dylan and the Beatles and The Curious World of Patent Models. The award-winning West Virginia Symphony Orchestra also calls the Clay Center home and the Maier Foundation Performance Hall also features popular Broadway musicals, comedies and dramas.
Just a short 5-10 minute drive from the Holiday Inn & Suites Charleston West, the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences is a great place to spend the day with your family. The Clay Center is open weekly from Wednesday to Sunday during the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and gallery admission is $7.50 for adults and $6 for children.
